Gerald Alexander, M.D.

Dr Alexander recently performed my back surgery as well as my husbands back surgery five years ago. I had crushed disks and my back would pop out at least 3-4 times a year. When it would happen I would be down for at least a week. I had the same problem as Tiger Woods. We talked over the surgery in detail and post recovery time, Dr and his team explained everything, made all the arraignments with the hospital, labs, and insurance authorizations. I felt completely at easy with the procedure. The first few days after surgery were tough but I was able to manage my pain with only Tylenol. Its been 6 months since my surgery and I would hands down do it all over again. My quality of life has dramatically improved and I'm not on any pain medications. Dr Alexander is an excellent surgeon, his PA Helgi is awesome, always there to answer any questions we had. The entire team is top notch!

I highly recommend Dr. Alexander. My 85 year old father in August 2020 had major spinal surgery. Dr. Alexander met with a team that included other surgeons to discuss my father’s case and options. The team moved forward on recommending surgery. Prior to surgery my dad was in severe pain and could only walk with assistance. After the five hour surgery dad was hospitalized for three days. Dad noticed pain improvement by the 4th day. He said, he no longer felt the pain from pre surgery but felt pain from the surgery. Despite his age father was diligent with the exercises the physical therapist assigned him to do not missing any. At 6 weeks dad was pain free and walking without assistance. Now dad continues to be the avid walker he was before...walking about 2 1/2 miles per day (in segments). Dr. Alexander is an amazing surgeon. I pray God keeps him safe and continues to guide him throughout his career.

I was very concern I had to have an Anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion at C5-C6 and at C7. I met with Dr Gerald Alexander, he explained the surgery in layman’s terms, I had pain in my left arm. For many years I’ve suffered with osteoporosis & arthritis in my lower back. I was sooo frightened of back surgery that I let it come to a point of well, insufferable pain. When I had no other choice but surgery, I went back to Dr. Alexander & long story short, had the surgery he initially suggested to me 4 years prior. Now, 2 months out, all I can say is Why did I wait so long!! He & his staff (who are awesome!) guided me thru the pre surgery procedure, which wasn’t nearly as awful as in my mind, every step of the way & answered all my questions with such grace & professionalism. What anyone would want when choosing a surgeon, especially when needing something as critical as implanting several chunks of titanium in one's neck after a car wreck... is someone with perfect eye contact, who is calm, and unrushed. Helge and the rest of his staff have the same demeanor, they are all personable and professional, and give me all the reassurance I need.

I’m 25 years and I feel like I got my life back. I had a ruptured disc in between my L5-S1. My leg would go numb whenever I would walk. I have to lay/sleep on the ground. After my surgery with Dr. Alexander I was able to walk confidently after a couple days. After a couple weeks I was able walk the dog and walk normal. I had had my 1st back surgery for scoliosis at 16; fused 4 vertebrae. I've always had back pain and was hunched over. I didn't realize I was learning forward because of the side-view of my spine. Dr. Alexander fused the 2 vertebra below my initial surgery w/ an angled piece. I was very nervous about a 2nd surgery because of the results from my first, but I am so glad I had it. Dr. Alexander performed a successful Microdiscectomy on my L5-S1 approximately 6 weeks ago. I suffered from Sciatica on my R-Side for about 6 months and was bedridden towards the end. I had arm pain and headaches for years, tried Chiropractic, injections, everything. I had a severe case of sciatica pain (8-9) that wouldn't go away. I had tried everything to help my pain go away to no avail. I did my research on spine surgeons and chose Dr. Alexander. Suffered from compressed discs and shooting nerve pain down legs. After trying physical therapy and one year of back injections, the end result was to have disc replacement and fusion surgery by Dr. Alexander. The surgery went extremely well and my nerve pain vanished The day of the surgery. I'm six weeks postop I'm feeling great, just building up strength again. I had L4 L5 spinal fusion done with Dr. Alexander 3 months ago. I am feeling sooooo much better! Much better than I've been the past few years. I suffered 8 years of excruciating back pain due to previous car accident, herniated disc, annular disc tear, as well as nerve damage down to S1. I went through 6 years of injections , epidural , PRP, and radio frequency nerve ablation. But I needed those procedures done every couple months. It got to a point where I couldn't even lift my leg and those injections and medication were not working. So I went with surgery with Dr. Alexander. I felt compelled to write a review of my overall experience with Dr. Alexander and his team, as it has been one year since my surgery. I suffered through horrible back pain for over 10 years and had just about given up on having a pain free life. Dr. Alexander was the third Dr. I visited about my issue and he suggested a different approach than the others. The two other doctors I visited both suggested fusion, but Dr. Alexander suggested a minimally evasive surgery using a COFLEX implant. I hesitated to have the surgery, but my disk herniated to the point where I could no longer move and lost 15-20 pounds within three weeks. Dr. Alexander and his staff moved into action. PA. Helge arranged for me to be admitted to Hoag on an emergency basis. Clarissa worked her magic with the insurance and took care of all the paperwork. These people are truly special and I always felt they had my best interest in mind. Dr. Alexander ended up performing the surgery he had originally suggested and repaired the damaged disk and installed the implant.

One year later I am feeling better than I have for past 10 years and I continue to get stronger each day. I should not have hesitated about having the original surgery Dr. Alexander suggested. Had I listed to him at the beginning, I truly believe the damage to my disk would have been less severe and my recovery would have been much quicker. As it was, I was walking the next day pain free and could only thank god that I found the right person at the right time to help me through what was the worst ordeal of my life. Dr. Alexander, Dr. Helge, and Clarissa Johnson, are not just good at their jobs, but they all are truly special people. Although I really enjoyed their company, I hope I never have to see any of them ever again, but If i needed help, I know where to go.

I suffered for over ten years with a herniated disc and sciatica. I had many steroid injections and physical therapy over the years with no improvement . I finally decided to take the step towards surgical intervention . I found Dr Alexander and his team at OSI and my experience couldn't have been better. I was very scared to undergo major surgery at my age but his team made me feel very confident and always made sure to answer all of my questions and concerns. My husband had neck spinal fusion surgery with Dr. Gerald Alexander. Dr. Gerald Alexander was refered by insurance company and I noticed that he had long time of experience.( more than 20 years something) Dr. Alexander showed up exact time without delay and my husband got well after 3 weeks. According to PA Helge Helgesen that it will take a while to get recovery and he was surprised that my husband did not take that much pain medication compare with other patient. I pray to the god for his success on his surgery because I heard a lot of people suggest not to take a surgery but my husband made it through with Dr. Gerald Alexander. PA Helgenson was super kind and nice also and try to spend more time with patient with any issue or concern. The receptionist name by Creasol (not sure if I spelled her right) was very professional too. First of all she speaks very clearly and detail oriented so I can understand the procedure of treatment before and after surgery. Even paperwork was all organized and easy to understand. One thing missing is that they are running two offices so most of time that you have to leave a message but they insure to return your call. I never visit the office but Dr. Gerald and staff is very helpful and passionate about patient and very knowledgeable too. I can definitely recommend Dr. Gerald Alexander.

My tingling arm is gone, and I think for my first surgery, I am the luckiest girl in the world.
