His training there included complex surgery of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
Dr. Smith was an assistant professor in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Southern California. During his time at the University he was co-director of the USC Center For Spinal Surgery and was heavily involved in research and education. Dr. Smith has a strong interest in academic medicine and has authored multiple full length manuscripts and book chapters in journals such as The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, SPINE, and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has also presented his research at multiple national meetings and received national honors and awards for his work.
In addition to his interest in clinical research and academic spine surgery, Dr. Smith enjoys teaching new generations of orthopaedic surgeons. He is a strong believer of educating patients and their families so that they fully understand their disease and all treatment options. His emphasis is always towards non-operative treatment, reserving surgery as the final option when conservative therapy fails. His goal is to provide our communities with high quality, compassionate, and affordable musculoskeletal care that is grounded in evidenced based medicine, the results of which will exceed expectations.
